TRAVELLER

FIRE-FIGHTING MODULE, LIGHT (TL10)

This module provides fire-fighting capability for the Basic modular cutter (See p. MC27), and can commonly be seen at Class III starports and above. It comprises a belly turret fitted with one to three extra-heavy water cannon, and a large (8-space) tank capable of holding 30,000 gallons of water or fire extinguisher foam. The module is fitted with louvres so that it can be refilled by skimming a local body of water, which takes 15 seconds at 100 mph. The louvres can be reversed to allow the cutter to water-bomb a large fire so that in a single pass, the cutter can drench an area 100 yards wide by 800 yards long.

Deckplan description: Two-thirds empty space with a water tank occupying most of the bottom third of the module. The turret is at the forward end of the module, underneath, with an access tube running up to the cutter's access valve. The louvres are situated at the bottom front of the module, either side of the turret, and are 1 yard wide.

Design notes:

Weirdly, the original design I submitted to Steve Jackson Games wasn't altered during playtest to account for the Basic cutter's lower cargo capacity by weight, so it could only be carried by the Assault cutter. Not really very useful. This version can be carried by a Basic, or even (if you're willing to fudge a little) a Slow.

I was going to redesign a new turret without sensors or targetting computer, then it occurred to me that a high resolution PESA, AESA and radscanner might actually be quite useful for locating the source of a fire, and a targetting computer would be useful for directing the water cannon taking into account wind direction, gravity, etc. They may not need to be quite so high-spec, but standard turrets are fairly cheap, so I didn't bother.
