GURPS WWII

A Cryptic Glossary

cilly: an indicator chosen non-randomly, for example by using a girlfriend's initials, an obscenity, or the indicator from the previous message.

crib: a piece of plaintext believed to be contained in an encrypted message. For example, a regular introduction or sign-off phrase.

depth: the alignment of two messages encrypted with the same key.

gardening: performing an action in order to provoke a stereotyped message, thereby providing a crib. E.g. laying mines at a certain grid reference, in order to provoke the enemy into reporting that mines were laid at that grid reference.

indicator: the first three or four letters of an Enigma message giving the rotor positions used for that message.

kiss: a message broadcast at a low (and solved) level of encryption later resent at a high level, thereby providing a massive crib.

pinch: the obtaining of enemy cryptographic equipment or code books clandestinely.
